Founded in 1994 in Sweden, Windak is a global player in cable packaging machinery, offering a comprehensive selection of high-speed rewind lines, automated spooling, and versatile coiling systems. Windak is the largest supplier of automatic packaging equipment for the cable industry in North America. With installations in over 40 countries, including India, Windak is investing in larger, high-capacity packaging solutions to support the evolving needs of cable manufacturers worldwide. Mr. Dieter Gerger, Sales Manager at Windak EMEA GmbH, shares this and much more during an interaction with Wire & Cable India.

Wire & Cable India: What are the key innovations and emerging trends shaping the wire and cable industry?
Dieter Gerger: The wire and cable industry is at the heart of two major global shifts — sustainability and digitalization. As the world transitions to a greener future, cable manufacturers are rising to meet new challenges with innovative solutions. Modern cables must withstand extreme environmental conditions, particularly in photovoltaic systems and offshore wind farms, where exposure to UV radiation, moisture, saltwater, and fluctuating temperatures is constant.
At the same time, the digital revolution demands faster, more reliable data transmission. This has led to the rise of fiber optic cables and ultra-high-speed connectivity solutions, fueling everything from 5G networks to smart cities. The industry is no longer just about connecting power and data – it’s about shaping the future of technology and sustainability in an increasingly interconnected world.
WCI: Please highlight the latest advancements and technological developments that you have introduced in your machines to address these evolving needs.
DG: Innovation is at the core of Windak’s philosophy, and our latest advancements reflect our commitment to efficiency and sustainability. We have engineered our machines to support biodegradable packaging materials, allowing cables to be securely packaged while reducing environmental impact. In fact, our latest developments enable cable packaging without any plastic at all—a major step toward a greener future. Beyond sustainability, we have enhanced the reliability of our machines to integrate seamlessly with extrusion lines, eliminating the need for additional rewind processes. This not only streamlines production but also enhances efficiency, making it possible to meet industry demands with reduced waste and improved operational flow.

WCI: How do you help your customers achieve better efficiency in their production processes? Maybe, by reducing energy consumption, enhancing quality or reducing the waste in the production process.
DG: Efficiency in cable production is not just about a single machine — it’s about optimizing an entire system of interconnected processes. Windak helps its customers to keep waste as small as possible. Our advanced monitoring systems continuously check cables for damage or production failures, ensuring that only top-quality products reach the end customer while minimizing waste. Full integration with factory ERP systems provides real-time traceability, offering precise control over every stage of production. Additionally, our intelligent scrap handling technology significantly reduces scrap length, optimizing resource usage and enhancing overall productivity. By combining smart automation with cutting-edge process control, Windak empowers manufacturers to achieve maximum efficiency with minimal waste.
WCI: Do you have an R&D team that addresses evolving needs? Please elaborate on your R&D efforts.
DG: At Windak, our dedicated R&D team is constantly pushing the boundaries of innovation to adapt to changing industry demands. Sustainability is a major focus—our engineers are developing packaging machines that minimize consumables and exclusively support environmentally friendly materials. At the same time, we are making our machines smarter, integrating advanced automation so they can operate with minimal human intervention. When operator input is required, our intuitive and self-explanatory user interface ensures seamless control, reducing complexity and training time. By combining sustainability, intelligence, and user-friendliness, our R&D efforts are shaping the future of cable packaging—delivering solutions that are not only cutting-edge but also practical and efficient.
WCI: What is your current product portfolio catering to the wire & cable sector? Are there any expansion plans in the pipeline?
DG: Windak offers a comprehensive range of cable packaging machines, focusing on three core areas: coiling, spooling, and rewinding. Each of these segments includes a diverse selection of base machines that can be customized with various features to meet specific customer needs.
Looking ahead, our expansion plans are driven by market demands.
We are currently developing larger coiling machines capable of handling coil diameters up to 800mm for bigger cables, i.e. FlexCoiler FC8. Additionally, we are scaling up our reel winding solutions to support drum sizes up to 3,000mm and loads of up to 20 tons. Beyond these advancements, we also provide stand-alone machines that seamlessly integrate into existing production lines.
As the industry evolves, so does our portfolio — ensuring that we continue to deliver cutting-edge, flexible, and high-performance solutions for wire and cable manufacturers worldwide.
