Vidya Wires began its journey with a capacity of 100 MT per year and is currently, in the phase of 18000 MT capacity. In an interview with Wire & Cable India, Mr. Shailesh Rathi, Director, Vidya Wires Pvt. Ltd. takes us through the manufacturing capabilities, market presence, and product range along with its applications.

Wire & Cable India: To start with, kindly take us through the business journey of Vidya Wires Pvt. Ltd. and the notable milestones so far.

Shailesh Rathi: ‘Excellence through Experience’ – the words that created insurmountable opportunities for Rathi Family when they incepted Vidya Wires in 1982. Vidya Wires began its journey with a capacity of 100 MT per year in 1982. Currently, we are in the phase of 18000 MT annual capacity and we are looking forward to reaching 30000 MT per year by 2024. Furthermore, we are now more focused on expanding our product portfolio globally by adding diversified products for niche markets.

WCI: Please outline the product portfolio along with its key features. Has there been any recent development as regards the expansion of the product range?

SR: Vidya Wires bags an assemblage of insulted copper & aluminium winding wires products and services that satiate the surging needs of manufacturers of electric transformers for power distribution, electric motors, telecommunication equipment, electrical appliances, windmill alternators, automobiles, compressors, solar, etc.

It is our company’s mission to deliver superior products to our customer’s satisfaction. To meet the surging demands and ensure timely deliverance, we have increased the manufacturing capacity of our plants. Furthermore, adding diverse products to our basket gives customers the opportunity to purchase multiple products under one roof.

WCI: Kindly take us through – manufacturing setup, R&D, and the production capabilities. Are you planning to undertake any expansion at the facility in the near future?

SR: We house top-of-the-line machinery imported from Europe and China. We preach innovation and engage in continuous R&D of our products to meet international standards. We are among the top three copper wire manufacturers in India and look forward to expanding our operations globally in the near future.

WCI: Please outline the current market presence of Vidya Wires and your goals with respect to increasing your reach in the domestic and global markets.

SR: Having founded Vidya Wires in 1982, we have had the opportunity to serve over 400 clients among the western, northern & southern zone of the Indian Market with superior quality copper products. We extend our export influence to developed markets like North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle Eastern & South East Asia countries.

WCI: What are the different means and the systems in place for quality management to ensure the production process is seamless and the quality is thoroughly maintained?

SR: Vidya Wires holds a reputed and recognised quality management certification of ISO 9001, 14001 & 45001 making it a full-fledged entity that caters to the growing needs of OEM business in India as well as across the globe. We have been in the copper industry for over four decades, and with the help of skilled labourers and employees, we manufacture the best quality products and that is why we have a trustworthy name in the copper industry. We always procure our raw material from reputed suppliers in India and follow stringent parameters to manufacture quality products. We are well-equipped with an in-house computerised laboratory to test and measure our products in order to maintain high-quality standards.

WCI: As the manufacturer of a range of copper wires, what are the growth drivers of the segment? What is the current size of the Indian copper wire market and the projected growth?

SR: Factors such as increased demand for electricity and robust investments in the building infrastructure sector mainly drive the growth of the copper wire market. In addition, the development of smart grids along with the upsurge in investments in smart upgrading of the power transmission and distribution systems will boost the demand for copper wire and cable. However, volatility in the prices of raw materials is projected to hamper the growth of the market. On the contrary, rapid urbanisation along with the rise in investments across the industrial sector is anticipated to create lucrative growth opportunities for the market.

India is the second-fastest-growing individual market for copper with a growth rate of 5.3 percent in the last decade (behind China with 7.8 percent). India’s copper share in cables is 8.4 percent against 50.6 percent of the global average.

WCI: Are there any new developments at the company that you want to highlight?

SR: As India draws closer to being a USD 5 trillion economy, the government’s strategic initiatives to encourage the infrastructure sector are providing a boost to the collective growth of the Indian economy, so insulated copper conductor plays a major role in the electric sector. Moreover, we are focussing on selling our products towards new projects like e-vehicles and solar renewable energy, which are known to be the future of our industry, and that future looks promising.
