Uttar Pradesh Mulls Privatization of 2 Power Distribution Companies

The Uttar Pradesh government has invited private companies to either form partnerships with or fully privatise the state-owned Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam and Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam.

In order to build a robust transmission infrastructure as well as uplift some loss-making electricity distribution companies (discoms), the State of Uttar Pradesh has floated a tender seeking private investment in two of its four power discoms. 

As per the government tender filed on January 12, the most populous state of the country has invited consultants, transaction advisers and private companies to either enable public-private partnership or fully privatise the Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam and the Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam.

Each of the two state-owned entities was currently responsible for power distribution in 21 districts of Uttar Pradesh.

A government official told a leading newspaper that the Government of Uttar Pradesh was awaiting the consultant’s report on the structure of the new distribution system. The decision was taken to reduce the losses of these discoms and ensure better services & efficiency, he added.
