The United States has announced retaliatory tariffs on India. US President Donald Trump held a press conference at the White House, where officials showcased a ‘Reciprocal Tariff Chart’ outlining tariff rates for various countries.

The board displayed a 26% reciprocal tariff on India, applied at a discounted rate. While the European Union and China are expected to respond with their own tariff measures, India has characterized this development as a “mixed bag but not a setback.” The Commerce Ministry stated that it is analyzing the impact of the 26% tariff, with the first 10% taking effect on April 5, 2025.
President Trump has declared April 2 as ‘Liberation Day’, as the administration imposes new tariffs and import duties aimed at reducing the US trade deficit and boosting domestic manufacturing.

Meanwhile, India and the US continue to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement to enhance two-way commerce and investment.
