The Uttar Pradesh government has demanded a whooping sum of Rs 20,000 crores from the Centre for the ailing power sector in UP. Energy department sources said that the funds would be used to construct new power plants and enhance the power distribution setup that the state government considers important in bridging the gap between demand and supply.
Informed sources in UP Power Corporation Limited said the funds will be used as state equity for construction of the power plants in the pipe line. A senior official privy to the presentation made before the 14th Finance Commission said that the corporation proposed construction of at least three power plants in the state sector. They include Obra 1320 MW, Harduaganj 660 MW and Panki 360 MW.
Together, the three power plants would wheel in around 2,350 MW of power. Therefore, the construction of the three power plants will require around Rs 12,000 crores alone. Officials, however, admit that the construction of new power plants may take around four to five years. Besides, the corporation has also proposed to construct new sub-stations and upgrade transmission and distribution lines to strengthen the power system in the state.
