Underground Cabling Phases 1, 2 in Bengaluru to be completed by December-end

The cabling project is being implemented at the cost of INR 5,400 crore in Bengaluru. With the execution of the project, there would be better quality and reliable power supply, reduction in accidents/interruptions and unauthorised connections, and for BESCOM, it will reflect in the reduction of T&D losses, lower maintenance costs, and improved load management.

The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) project of taking more than 7,000 km of 11-kV cable lines underground is making headway, while work on phases 1 and 2 is expected to be completed by December-end, according to Mr. P. Rajendra Cholan, Managing Director of BESCOM.

The project is being executed at a cost of INR 5,400 crore in many parts of the city. In fact, the work on the project was disrupted due to the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns.

According to Mr. Cholan, the progress in both phases 1 and 2 of the cabling project has been quite good. While around 80 percent progress has been achieved in the conversion of HT cables, nearly 83 percent has been attained in LT cables under phase 1, and around 93 percent progress in the conversion of HT and LT cables under phase 2 has been achieved.

BESCOM has taken up phases 1 and 2 in regions including – Malleswaram, Rajajinagar, Sadashivanagar, Jayamahal, Shivajinagar, Peenya, Hebbal, Rajarajeshwarinagar, Sahakarnagar, Yelahanka, Jakkur, Lingarajapuram, Hebbal, Ramamurthynagar, Basaveshwaranagar, Mahalakshmi Layout, Chamarajpet, Girinagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout, BTM Layout, Jayanagar, J.P. Nagar, Indiranagar, Nagarbhavi, and a few other areas.

After the successful execution of the project, there would be better quality and reliable power supply, in addition to the reduction in – accidents/interruptions and unauthorised connections owing to tampering. As for the power utility – BESCOM, it will reflect in the reduction of T&D losses, lower maintenance costs, and improved load management.
