Taprath Elastomers LLP: Catering Quality at Economical Cost to Reduce Overseas Dependence

Part of the 40-year-old Rathi conglomerate comprising four business units in India, Taprath is the first company of its kind in India to manufacture a wide range of synthetic elastomers-based products. It specializes in NBR powders and SBR powders, rubber compounds, thermoplastic compounds, and research on high tech materials. The company has been present in the E-Beam segment since 2014. “What inspired us to develop ready-to-use E-Beam compounds was the sheer quantum of requirements that India witnesses today,” Mr. Abhishek Rathi, Founder and Director, Taprath Elastomers LLP shares with Wire & Cable India.

History
We have been manufacturing Electron Beam radiation crosslinkable compounds since 2019. Our first application development for cable compounds was railways since we were already vendors to Indian Railways through our sister concern where we supply UIC vestibules and brake hoses. We have already been present in the E-Beam segment since 2014 where we provided other polymer additives for the same application. What inspired us to develop ready-to-use E-Beam compounds was the sheer quantum of requirements that India witnesses today. When we started, there were a handful of cable manufacturers with radiation technology. But with each year, we saw more and more manufacturers entering this segment. Today, there are multiple applications where radiation technology is being used and these are bound to grow in the future.

USP
We promise quality, consistency and the ability to offer custom development for varied applications. We strive to offer our customers the best quality material at an economical cost minimizing our reliance on foreign suppliers. Our Group’s motto has been to develop import substitutes, aligning with the vision of Make in India. As the cable industry grows steadily at a 5% CAGR, India has become a significant exporter and one of the largest consumers of cables. We’re excited to contribute to this growth and be part of the industry’s success.

Technological Advancements
We are a compounding company and we use various types of compounding technology to manufacture cable compounds, bio-degradable compostable compounds, functional additive masterbatches, etc. One of the biggest challenges we see is our dependency on overseas companies for raw materials. We would urge the polymer producers to develop and manufacture specialty raw materials in India, which will make us truly independent.

Raw Materials & Quality
We are dependent partly on domestic suppliers, but for certain speciality raw materials, we have to depend on overseas suppliers. As I mentioned earlier, we would like to see more and more polymer producers in India develop and offer these specialty polymers and additives in India. This will reduce the volatility, cost of import and dependency on outside suppliers which will help the entire value chain in the cable industry.

Each product has its own set of quality checks that are performed on every batch before the product is packed to be dispatched. We are ISO-certified and follow all necessary checks in our plant as well.

Sustainability
Our Electron Beam radiation crosslinkable compounds are designed with sustainability as a core principle. Here’s how we ensure their sustainability:

  • Halogen-Free Composition: Our compounds are free from halogens, which means they do not release harmful gases when exposed to fire. This not only reduces environmental pollution but also enhances the safety of the end-users.
  • Fire Retardant: The fire retardant properties of our compounds significantly reduce the risk of fire-related accidents, contributing to overall safety and reducing potential environmental hazards.
  • Energy Efficiency: The use of electron beam radiation in the crosslinking process is highly energy-efficient. It allows for rapid processing at lower temperatures, minimizing energy consumption and reducing our carbon footprint.
  • Innovation and Continuous Improvement: We are committed to continuous improvement and innovation. Our R&D team constantly explores new materials and processes to enhance the sustainability of our products.
Through these measures, we ensure that our products are not only high-performing but also contribute positively to environmental sustainability.

Future Growth Prospects
We have been growing as expected for FY 2023-24. With new capacities being installed, we hope to grow faster in the coming future.
