The crude steel production at its plant in Odisha’s Sundargarh district will rise from 4.2 MTPA to 4.85 MTPA.

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of SAIL has announced that it will undertake an expansion of around INR 5,000 crore with the addition of new production units and technological measures.
As per a press release, the crude steel production at its plant in Odisha’s Sundargarh district will also go up from 4.2 MTPA (million tonnes per annum) to 4.85 MTPA and saleable steel production from 3.880 to 4.325 MTPA. In view of the National Steel Policy, the RSP is intending to expand its production capacity of hot metal from the current level of 4.5 MTPA to 4.855 MTPA.

Correspondingly, a new coke oven battery-7 having a production capacity of 0.770 MTPA will be installed near coke ovens battery-6. Further, a new steel melting shop (SMS)-3 with the capacity of 1.15 MTPA is going to be installed adjacent to SMS-1, and normalising furnace with 0.3 MTPA capacity is going to be set up within the new plate mill.

In the year 2013-14, a massive-scale modernization and expansion worth around INR 13,000 crore was implemented in RSP that increased its capacity from 2 MTPA to 4.5 MTPA. A short while ago, a new hot strip mill was commissioned for a cost of around INR 3,000 crore.
