RInfra’s New Transmission Line For Mumbai Commissioned Successfully

16 February, 2012

Reliance Infrastructure Limited’s Mumbai Transmission Division has successfully commissioned its new transmission link on Maharashtra State Transmission Company Limited’s (MSETCL) Boisar – Borivali Transmission line that brings power to Mumbai from outskirts of the city.

The new 220kV Loop In Loop Out (LILO) line, constructed near Ghodbunder, was successfully charged by the transmission utilities at 6.21 p.m. on Tuesday, 14th February 2012 and was taken into service at 7.04 p.m. on the same day. With this, Mumbai will have additional 150MW power from city’s outskirts, as it will ease congestion on city’s transmission network, especially during summer seasons, when the power demand is at its peak. The Company has successfully commissioned the new line ahead of schedule, as against its original commissioning schedule in March 2012.

While commenting on the development, Mr. Lalit Jalan, CEO & Director, Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. said, “This was much needed transmission link for ensuring stability to Mumbai’s transmission system. The link would not only take away the load on the existing system but also ensure additional power for Mumbai.” He further added, “The new link will also ensure and enhance stability of the generation system of the entire grid.”

The Mumbai transmission network was facing congestion due to ever increasing demand for power as well as lack of adequate transmission corridors to bring additional power to Mumbai. This had enhanced criticality of the system that might have resulted into grid failure. Gauging the criticality of the problem and its potential impact, RInfra in the year 2008 had proposed its scheme of LILO of MSETCL Boisar-MSETCL Borivili line at existing 220kV EHV Ghodbunder sub-station of RInfra.

Reliance Infrastructure Ltd., the transmission and distribution licensee for Mumbai for next 25 years has till date spent Rs. 650 Crs. in strengthening Mumbai transmission system. Company, has recently commissioned three new Extra High Voltage Substations to de-congest load on transmission and sub transmission system and has further plans to add few more in addition to the existing six. The Company is also executing the prestigious Western Region System Strengthening Scheme (WRSS) Project for more inflow of surplus power from power rich North East Region to the power starved Western Region.
