Power Consumption in India Reached All-Time High of 250 GW in May 2024

The total installed power generation capacity in India surged by 83.8 percent, increasing from 249 GW as of March 31, 2014, to 457 GW as of November 30, 2024.

Power consumption in India registered an increase of almost 6 percent in December 2024, reaching 130.40 billion units (BU), as compared to 123.17 BU in December, 2023.

The country witnessed an all-time high in consumption of power in May 2024, when it reached 250 GW. Earlier, the highest peak power demand was witnessed in September 2023, when it was registered at 243.27 GW.

The highest supply in a day (peak power demand met) also rose to 224.16 GW in December 2024 from 213.62 GW.

The Government of India had earlier estimated a peak power demand of 235 GW during the day and 225 GW during evening hours for May 2024. It also projected 240 GW power consumption during daytime and 235 GW in the evening hours for June 2024.

As per the Ministry of Power, peak power demand is estimated to reach 270 GW in the summers of 2025.

Experts have linked the power demand and consumption to the use of heating appliances like heater and geysers amid cold wave conditions prevailing across the country.

They said the growth of power demand as well as consumption would become steady in January due to lower mercury levels.
