The Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Transmission Corp. (TransCo) are targeting to complete a smart and green grid plan by end-2023 to ensure the seamless integration of additional renewable energy capacity to the grid. The DOE is pushing for the acceleration of renewable energy development in the country.

Mr. Michael Sinocruz, Director for the Energy Policy and Planning Bureau of DOE, said, “In the transmission sector, there will be collaboration between the DOE and TransCo centered on the formulation of the smart and green grid plan. Hopefully, we can complete that by the end of this year and that will be published early next year.”

Sinocruz further added that the smart and green grid plan would serve as the basis for the transmission development plan of the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP), “We are going to look at the specific locations. What if there will be needed infrastructure or transmission reinforcement to be able to accommodate more renewable energy? From this strategic transmission plan, NGCP should formulate an implementation plan for this. Why? Under this strategic transmission plan, we’re going to identify specific areas for offshore wind and other renewable energy resources and from that, even the timeline that we need to accomplish or to put up the transmission requirements for the entry of more renewable energy.”
