Resting on these three pillars, Hulas Wire Industries (HWI) was set up with a vision to become the leading producer of all non-ferrous products. It began its journey at the time when industries in Nepal were at infancy, with a vision to capture the domestic market for GI wire. Today, Hulas Wire Industries is the largest wire manufacture in Nepal and one of the eminent exporters. In a detailed chat with Mr. Himanshu Golchha, Director, Hulas Wire Industries, he detailed us about the company, their product divisions, product development and their CSR activities.
Wire & Cable India: Kindly brief us about HWI?
Himanshu Golchha: Hulas Wire Industries Limited is the largest steel wire producing unit in Nepal. We have the latest technologies for wire drawing and galvanizing to manufacturer G.I. Wire, HB Wire and High Tensile Galvanizing Steel Core Wire for ACSR Conductors, CA Round and Formed Wires, Barbed Wires etc. All these products are manufactured to meet the requirement of international standards like, ASTM, BS, JIS, BIS and ISO etc. We are also authorized in Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCL).
WCI: Highlight your product range and its applications in different industries along with what all markets you serve?
HG: We have 3 divisions mainly Alloy, Steel Wire and TMT. We also manufacture H.B. Wire and other special kinds of wire which are used in overhead transmission lines as primary & secondary distribution conductors.
Copper Alloy Division
We forayed into the copper sector with a modern manufacturing facility offering continuous casting and cold rolled copper and copper based alloy strips/sheets and foils. The brass coils, strips, foils and sheets are used in electronics, telecommunications, automobiles, electrical industries (bulb caps, switch gear, switches), defence production, locks, zipper, flash light (torch), buttons, handicraft and household applications.
Steel Wire Division
Galvanized mild steel wire: They are used in manufacturing of wire netting, wire mesh, fencing, barbed wire and in agriculture, irrigation, prevention of soil erosion, road construction etc. We have installed the latest wire drawing machines with rotating dyes and both water and air cooling to get the wire surface fully round and clear. Simultaneously a new galvanizing plant has been installed to get the coil in vertical take up.
Cable armour wire: These are galvanized mild steel wires in round & formed sections used to armour all grades of electric cables. These wires prevent the cable from damaging during digging, provide strength to the cables and protect the outer surface. A separate galvanizing plant has been installed for the production of the following wires as special CAQ material is processed to get the desired properties as per the specification IS:3975/1999.
Barbed wire: Barbed wire is galvanized steel with two strands of wire used for fencing; these wires have 4 points and are formed by twisting of two wires and 2 line wires. The barbed manufacturing wires are made using German technology.
Gabion box & PVC coated gabion box: We design and manufacture gabion boxes made of heavy zinc coating steel wire. Our gabions are environment friendly and cost effective. Our double twisted hexagonal gabion boxes are designed to tolerate and withstand huge forces generated by retaining earth or flowing water without breaking or cracking.
PVC coated galvanized steel core wire: The PVC coated galvanized steel core wire, is more corrosive resistant and has a longer life and is used for holding rocks in mountainous regions, river tanning and for hydro power. We have installed the latest wire drawing machines with rotating dyes and both water and air cooling to get the wire surface fully round & clear. Simultaneously a new galvanizing plant has been installed to get the coil in vertical take up.
Thermo Mechanically Treated (TMT) bars division
Hulas TMT is a new-generation-high-strength steel having superior properties such as weldability, ductility and bendability meeting the highest quality standards at international level attaining higher yield strength. An exceptionally clean bonding of its qualitative attributes makes it stand out for any everlastingly construction. The TMT steel bars are primarily used by the construction industry. Its high-corrosion and rust-resistance features make it the first choice for buildings in coastal areas and in areas of high humidity.
WCI: What are the major product developments done at HWI?
HG: Hulas girder: We have developed numerous efficient girder applications in construction methodology. The new versatile methodology, using Hulas Girder, is most appropriate for structures ranging from low cost houses to huge hydro projects. It will provide excellent economy and efficiency in terms of saving steel, wood, construction time and cost. With less steel, it can efficiently withstand forces causing torsion, vibration, impact and secondary stresses as well as combat the common compressive, tensile and shear forces, which control the design of most civil structures. They are specially manufactured from wires in such geometric formations, which provide maximum strength and rigidity with most efficient and minimum use of steel.
Chain link: We started the production of flexible chain link for fencing purpose. This product is produced from heavy zinc coated mild steel core wire of highest standards and quality.
Razor blade concertina wire: Concertina is a new concept in fencing. The concertina wire is made of razor sharp edges with high tensile galvanized steel core wire, which possesses high strength. It can be used for the fencing of houses, factories, farm houses & other places of high risk.
Earthing wire: Recently, we have started the production of earthing wire which is manufactured from high quality wire rods (high carbon & mild steel).
PC wire: We also produce world class PC wire from high quality wire.
WCI: What kind of steps does Hulas take to ensure green and safe operations?
HG: Having the responsibility of being an active social organization, Hulas Wire is an environment friendly organization and has duly adopted the following principles as approved by ISO 14001:
• We make all efforts in limiting pollution by continually reducing the generation of waste from the main source itself.
