The Central government has informed the Parliament that the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) has identified significant wind power potential in Odisha.
Replying to a query by MP Anita Subhadarshini in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy and Power Shripad Yesso Naik said the wind resource assessment conducted by NIWE indicated an estimated wind power potential of about 12129 MW at 150 meter above ground level in the state of Odisha.

He said the NIWE indicated wind potential sites in the districts of Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Puri, Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Balasore and Kendrapara.

As per the Minister, in line with the Prime Minister’s announcement at COP26, the Government of India was working towards achieving 500 GW of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources, including wind energy, by 2030 in the country.

The wind energy capacity installed during the last two years: FY 2022-23 and FY 2023-24 in the country, stood at 2275.55 MW and 3253.38 MW, respectively.
