US $ 7.67 billion LS Cable & System (LSC&S), founded in 1962, is a global leading wire and cable manufacturer with its headquarters located in Korea. It has 10,000 employees and more than 80 operations located in 27 countries. They provides a wide range of energy and telecom cable solutions for the energy infrastructure, construction, wind power, marine & offshore, automotive, railway, telecommunication and electronic industries. With high, medium, and low voltage power cables, they meet their customers’ demands for cable and cable systems for power transmission and distribution in energy infrastructure and related industries. LSC&S also serves the needs of customers for optical communication which is the platform of broadband networks and offers various optical cables and optical fibers of single and multi mode for LAN, access, long distance and metropolitan networks. Further they also supply coaxial cables, UTP cables and FTTH (Fiber to The Home) solutions for rapid and massive data transmission.
Core Competencies at LS Cable & System
LSC&S is a total solutions provider in the electrics, electronics, energy and industrial materials sector and the company operates its core business under the following four divisions – Energy, Telecommunication, Industrial Material, and Integrated modules & cables. A strong emphasis on research and development is one of the core strengths of LSC&S and thus the company has consistently claimed a pioneering role in the global markets. From the extra high-voltage cables which form the backbone of electric power networks, to submarine cables which require the highest technology and installation skill competencies, to the superconducting cables which will lead the next-generation of power networks, it not only secures its basic core technologies but also builds on them by developing differentiated high performance products.
A concurrent focus on creative partnerships is the other core strength of LSC&S. Recognizing the futility of ‘one size fits all’ solutions in an ever-changing market environment; they meet the unique set of requirements of every customer with innovative solutions especially designed to fulfill the customer’s goals in the most efficient manner.
Indian Ingress of LS Cable & System
The LS Cable and System India (LSC&SI), a wholly owned subsidiary of LSC&S, was established in 2007 with an initial focus on manufacturing coaxial cables and RF antennas in India. In the years since then, the company’s manufacturing facilities have expanded to include one of India’s largest power cable manufacturing plants at Bawal in Haryana. The state-of-the-art LSC&SI manufacturing plant is spread over a 162,000 sqm site and has been built with an investment of Rs.270 crores.
The operating facilities include:
- A coaxial cable and RF antenna plant that manufactures mobile telecom network products. It has the capacity to produce Rs. 500 crores worth of communication cables. The plant is equipped with different testing facilities to ensure stringent quality output.
- An anechoic chamber for testing, performance measurement, analysis and evaluation of the antenna products – India’s first civilian and commercial anechoic chamber for crucial testing.
- A power cable plant with the capacity to produce Rs. 1000 crores worth of LSC&S’s trademark ultra high voltage power cables (up to 220kV) and Optic Ground Wire.
This fast growing operation has its corporate office in Gurgaon besides offices in Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata and employs over 300 professionals.
Indian Incidents
It is worth noting that even before the establishment of its Indian subsidiary, LSC&S has had years of experience in the construction of ultra-high voltage subterranean lines in different parts of India like New Delhi and Bangalore since 1997. The OPGW project was executed in 1997 connecting Hissar and Moga, two cities at a distance of 312km. These projects include other OPGW projects connecting all parts of India such as Jaipur and Indore, Asoj and Koradi, Korba and Vijayawada, and Gajuwaka and Chennai. LS Cable & System also helped install a 400kV East-North interconnector overhead transmission line project and high-voltage underground installations in New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ukai and Sorang.
This long relationship with the Indian industry manifests itself as brand recognition and trust within the sectors in which LSC&SI operates. The company has built its reputation for reliability in India by successfully completing large-scale turnkey projects. To exemplify, PGCIL has recently awarded a 5,200 km OPGW SR Bid to LSC&SI.
Future plans for India
India is among the top 5 energy consuming nations in the world accounting for 3.7% of the world’s entire energy consumption. And the country is investing heavily in energy projects across states. That makes it a key strategic market of focus for LSC&S which is known for its offering in this vertical globally.
LS Cable and System is committed to the Indian market for long-term and this significant investment in the form of LSC&SI only reinforces that commitment. They are looking to grow rapidly in India and attain market leadership position in the key power and communication markets in the near to medium term. It will contribute to the growth of power and communication infrastructure sectors in India by doing projects with the best technology and leveraging years of experience in the cable business.
Investment and expansion in India’s infrastructure sector is crucial to sustain the rate of economic growth. With respect to the power sector, the pressing tasks of the moment, the game changers, are the expansion of both capacity and the efficacy of the distribution network. The extra high voltage LS cables with a capacity upto 400kv would fit in perfectly here. Similarly, investment and expansion are also necessary in the telecom infrastructure. With its expertise in antenna and cables, they are now ideally situated to be a local partner and partake in the effort to improve telecom & power infrastructure.
Through continuous investment, LSC&S India will secure competencies to produce value-added products such as extra high-voltage power cables, cutting-edge overhead transmission lines, industrial specialty cables, integrated modules and cables and broadband telecommunication and optical equipment. In India it will improve its technological power and productivity to the highest level in the world.
Based on its technological power and abundance of global experiences acquired through numerous projects across different continents over the years, LS Cable & System will participate in power and communications infrastructure projects promoted by the Indian government and therefore make active contributions to India’s growth and development. In particular, it will further strengthen its portfolio of power products and continuously secure its solution competencies for wire and wireless backbone networks and EPC businesses.
LSC&S has plans to export our products manufactured here to its global network spanning South West Asia, Middle East and Africa. India will become the hub of its distribution network to these areas. These global sales would, of necessity and invariably, impact their understanding of development of telecom and power infrastructure in remote areas. And that in turn will further enable them to create even better solutions for different parts of India.
Indian Vision
Through its continual effort, LS Cable & System India aims to be the No. 1 cable company in India by 2020. It also aspires to be a company that is trusted and liked by the people of India by actively discharging its corporate social responsibility through different sustainable projects and activities.
