India Needs 3.9 Million EV Charging Stations to Achieve EV30@30

In order to reach its ambitious goal of 30 percent electric vehicle (EV) adoption by 2030, India needs to install at least 3.9 million EV charging stations within the next five years.

This was revealed in a report recently released by GameChanger Law Advisors (a boutique corporate and commercial law firm headquartered in Bengaluru) and Speciale Invest (an early-stage venture capital firm based investing in disruptive technologies at the pre-seed and seed stages)

Titled Charging Ahead II, the report revealed that the charging ecosystem of India, despite attracting investment worth over USD 450 million, remained underdeveloped, with only one public charger per 135 EVs, far behind the global average of 1 per 6-20 EVs.

Underscoring the need for increased public and private investments, the report stressed on adopting best global practices and enhancing policy incentives to bridge the infrastructure gap.

It further projected firms such as Tata Power, Charge Zone and Statiq as major players in the charging infrastructure, who would drive double-digit growth and attract investment in the sector through various means, including network expansions.

As per the report, though the country was on a well-defined and scalable track to achieve its EV30@30 target, it needed a blend of capital models, tax incentives, single-window clearances, disabled-friendly infrastructure and stringent fire-safety standards to attract investments, including both institutional and foreign, to build a robust EV charging infrastructure.

According to the Ministry of Power, as on February 2, 2024, 12,146 public EV charging stations were operational across the country.
