India and Bangladesh are working on a proposal to establish a power grid interconnection linking the Indian state of Meghalaya and the Bangladeshi city of Sylhet. If the proposed power grid interconnection finalized then this would be the second cross-border electricity transmission link between India and Bangladesh.
The two countries are already developing a grid interconnection between India’s Berhampur and Bangladesh’s Bheramara with up to 500MW power transmission capacity.
The proposed second grid interconnection would have a capacity to transmit about 130MW power, according to Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India Tariq A Karim.
This transmission link was one of the several power grid interconnections proposed in January 2005 in a study prepared for the US Agency for International Development.
