PM’s Gati Shakti Master Plan will expand the current National Grid by 27,000 ckm to a total of 4,54,200 ckm

Prime Minister’s Gati Shakti Master Plan aims at expanding the Indian power transmission network from 4,25,500 ckm, as on May 31, 2020, to 4,54,200 ckm by 2024-25. The targeted 28,700 ckm addition by 2024-25 has been revised to 27,000 ckm, according to the Lok Sabha reply by Mr. R.K. Singh, Union Minister of Power, on April 6, 2023.

The additional network was proposed under Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) at 220 kV and above voltage level, however, certain projects will reach completion beyond 2024-25, while certain new projects have also been identified to the commission before 2024-25. The overall investment of identified projects has been estimated at about INR 75,000 crore.

The current inter-regional capacity of the National Grid is 1,12,250 MW. As on February 28, 2023, the transmission network consisted of 4,68,977 ckm of 220 kV and above voltage transmission lines and 11,58,875 MVA of transformation capacity through 220 kV and above voltage substations.

India’s robust National Grid ensures reliable, secure, and seamless power transmission from resource-rich areas and surplus regions/states to the rest of the nation, including major load centers, and deficit regions/states, and its gradual capacity expansion helps to commensurate with the growing electricity demand of the nation. Financial and distribution network constraints suffered by state-line transmission networks and other distribution companies lead to power cuts sometimes, which will be fixed as ISTS gets strengthened under the Gati Shakti Scheme.
