Eurodraw: “Indian Market Presence Fundamental for our Future Growth”

Eurodraw Wire Equipment designs, develops and manufactures equipment, process lines and complete plants for the steel wire industry. Supplying high-technology machines all over the world, not only for production of “tire steel cord”, but also for many other different applications of steel wire such as ropes, low relaxation strands and wires and other wire products, Eurodraw exports around 25 percent of its products to India, and says its presence in the Indian market is fundamental for its future. This was revealed by Mr. Stefano Paloschi, Area Sales Manager, Eurodraw Wire Equipment and Alberto Cervino, Area Sales Manager, Eurodraw Wire Equipment, during their interaction with the Wire & Cable India magazine.

Wire & Cable India: Please tell us about new developments at Eurodraw.

Alberto Cervino: Our company is committed to having a presence in different segments of the steel wire market. One of the leading products that we are promoting are the double twist strander and bunchers for the production of steel wire ropes. This technology is now being adopted by an increasing number of rope manufacturing companies with incredible success as the quality of wire rod and wires have substantially improved over the years, allowing the use of this technology very effectively. The double twist process is not only much more efficient, but allows to substantially reduce energy costs, saves factory space and, not of lesser importance, is the fact that it makes the process much safer for the operators.

Our company has been proposing these types of machines for over 40 years, and by continuously investing in their development, the technological level we can propose is unmatched. The double twist machines can be categorized in two main types, the “IN-OUT” type machines which are mostly suitable to produce finer wire strands at extremely high speeds and the “OUT-IN” machines that are characterized by their extremely high efficiency as the spool size with the filament wire is practically unlimited.

To give you an example, the latest machine we have presented is the DT (6+1)/400 model, which is a “IN-OUT” type machine, designed to make 6+1 wire stands up to 3.00 in size and with loading capacity of N°7 spools of 400 mm in diameter. The practical operating speed is 3600 twists per minute, which is several times faster and consumes a fraction of the power required by a comparable size tubular strander. Other notable developments have been achieved in the design of our wire drawing machines and in particular for the capstan cooling system. After a three-year development process, we now propose wire drawing lines for low carbon steel wire, which can reach speeds of 50 m/sec when making 1.25 mm diameter wire starting from 5.50 mm wire rod. One of these machines is successfully running in India.

WCI: How do you help your customers achieve better efficiencies, while ensuring reduction in wastage and energy consumption.

AC: Efficiency, power consumption and reliability of our machines is always at the top of our priorities, as we understand that when our customers are investing in prime technology and quality equipment, they must receive equipment which has substantial advantages compared to what the market can offer. For rope manufacturing, tubular stranders are power hungry as the masses to rotate are very substantial, while double twist machines only rotate the strand. This translates into a power requirement which is only a small fraction of what a tubular strander will require to make the same product. Additionally, for the “OUT-IN” double twist machines, our power generative payoffs are equipped with electrical motors for adjusting the filament wire tension, which generates power that is sent back into the common DC bus lowering the power requirements even more. With regards to efficiency, the “OUT-IN” double twist machines allow wire filament loads that are virtually unlimited. This means that a machine can run for days without the need of being reloaded with an operating speed, which is several times faster than a comparable tubular machine. Efficiency automatically improves dramatically compared to other types of machines that can be loaded with small size spools and will require continuous reloading.

WCI: Kindly share information about your product portfolio.

AC: We like to consider ourselves as a one stop shop for our customers and offer turnkey solutions rather than just machines. Our product range is, therefore, very complete and starts from wire rod preparations of various types, each of them designed specifically for low or high carbon wire rods as well as stainless steel wire rods. Our wire drawing machines range includes machines from 180 mm to 1200 mm capstan sizes as well as a full selection of different take-ups. We propose surface plating equipment such as patenting and brass plating lines, electro galvanizing lines, coppering lines, bead wire lines. For the rope industry we propose bunchers, stranders and closers up to rope sizes of 30 mm maximum. For the concrete reinforcement industry, we propose high efficiency cold rolling lines, low relaxation PC wire and PC strand lines, several of which are installed in India. Finally, we manufacture the full range of equipment for production of welding wire and stick electrode cores.

WCI: Please share details about your manufacturing facility and capacities.

Stefano Paloschi: We have a large facility in Pogliano Milanese, close to Milan. Our premises occupy 16,000 sqm of land, of which 8,000 sqm is dedicated to equipment assembly and 2,500 sqm is office area. Our machines are built in Italy, sourcing parts exclusively from Italian and European suppliers. Our strict quality verification protocols and our ISO 9001 vision 2000 procedures ensure that whatever is delivered to our customers is of prime quality. We have the capacity of producing simultaneously various machines as we are equipped with 12 cranes, which cover all the assembly area.

WCI: Please tell us about your market footprint globally as well as in India.

SP: We are an Italian company exporting 95 percent of our production, which is sent all over the world. Our presence is in all continents and we have equipment operating in over 100 different countries. India is a very important market for us, which has been growing steadily for several years. The development of the Indian infrastructure is generating many requirements for the wire machinery industry, to which we actively participate. The Indian market represents about 25 percent of our sales this year, which is a substantial percentage and includes wire drawing lines, LRPC strand lines, machines for rope production as well as other machines for other wire applications. The African market is also increasing its importance with steel production growing substantially in that area as well. Many of our clients in Africa have Indian nationality and appreciate our products there as well and have placed several orders with us. Our company has a global presence and through our solid network of representatives, we carefully follow our clients all over the world.
