China Telecom is serious about providing its cities with an optical connection so it has launched its “Broadband Optical Network City,” an initiative that will bring a fiber link to every one of China’s cities in the next three years.
According to a report in the People’s Daily Online, China Telecom’s ambitious plan will increase the network’s average download speed to over 20 Mbps. Following the completion of its 12th Five-Year Plan period, the service provider said that the fiber network will also reach all residential, government and business users that reside in Southern China.
This latest effort follows China Telecom’s ongoing Fiber to the Home network efforts. China Telecom previously announced that it would deploy an 18 million line Fiber to the Home network with 100 Mbps in major cities and 12 Mbps minimum to 70 percent of users in the towns and cities it currently serves.
