July 6, 2014

Ethiopian Power Engineering Industry (EPEI) announced its wire and cable production plant, which was established in 2012, has commenced pilot production.

Back in 2012, when established with 80 Million Birr ($4 million), the plant was intended to produce copper wires for transformers, electronic products and motors of generation.

The Industry’s General Manager, Major Asefa Yohannes, said that during the trial period the plant will have a capacity of producing 500 tons of copper wires in a year.

Nonetheless, upon operating with full capacity the factory is expected to produce 2,500 tons of copper per annum. This is said to substitute the country’s demand for which it has been importing products.

According to Asefa, the factory will help to interconnect plants that produce transformer, cable and motor.

In accordance with local demand, wires with a diameter between 0.7 and 2.5 are going to be produced by EPEI.

The Industry was established by the Metals and Engineering Corporation for leading industrialisation of the nation.
