Andhra Pradesh discom to lay more cables to check voltage fluctuations

April 20, 2013

To eliminate voltage fluctuations and transformers going bust due to overloading, the Central Power Distribution Company Limited (CPDCL) has decided to lay additional lines at various places in Greater Hyderabad.

According to officials, operation circles of Greater Hyderabad have identified 16 areas, which have witnessed regular instances of overloading on the existing electric feeders resulting in voltage problems especially during summer. While eight distribution lines have been identified in Hyderabad, the other eight are in Rangareddy district.

According to CPDCL authorities, every 33 KV line can take a maximum load of 400 amps. However, though the load does not exceed 300 amps in most places, it crosses the 400-mark in some areas leading to transformers either tripping due to voltage problems or exploding due to overheating. Such breakdowns usually happen during peak summer.

To prevent such cases that lead to local power breakdowns, the authorities have decided to lay new lines as there are no additional lines at present to ease the load on the main cables. Officials said that additional lines are being provided from Gun Rock to Marredpally, Goshamahal to Langer Houz, Madhapur, Sarojini Devi Hospital to Asifnagar, Erramanzil to Nims, IDPL to Praga Tools, Chandulal Baradari to Petla Burz, Madhapur (132 kv) to Madhapur (33 kv), Gachibowli to Chandanagar, Shapur Nagar to Vijayanagar Colony, Medchal to Kompally, Ibrahimbagh to Tippu Khan Bridge, Bolaram to Mayurnagar sub station, Botanical Garden at Kothaguda to Engineering Staff College of India at Gachibowli.

Each additional line covering a distance of 1 km to 2 kms would cost about Rs. 30 lakh. All the lines will be completed in a month, according to an official. Meanwhile, the CPDCL is also in the process of setting up new 33/11 kv sub-stations for better power supply in the city. While the plans have been prepared for new 60 substations, 20 sub-stations are finalised and would be set up in the next few months.
