In order to reduce electricity expenses and achieve carbon neutrality through eco-friendly production capabilities, LS Cable & System has started production of submarine cables at its Donghae facility located in Gangwon Province of South Korea, using electricity generated from a 3,000 kW solar power generation system.
As per the South Korean cable major, the newly-established solar system is expected to produce approximately 3,600 MWh (megawatt-hours) of electricity annually, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of about 1,200 households.

LS Cable & System anticipates saving over USD 4.8 million (7 billion won) in electricity costs over the system’s lifespan of around 20 years. It would also help the Donghae facility to achieve its goal of transitioning to 100 percent renewable energy.
The investment holds major significance in view of the global clients increasingly requiring their suppliers to use renewable energy as part of their bidding conditions.

In December 2024, it became the first South Korean company to receive official approval from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) for its carbon neutrality commitment. It has also established a long-term roadmap targeting net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
