Indian Transmission Network Expands 70% in a Decade

The transmission network has increased from 2.91 lakh ckm in 2014 to 4.92 lakh ckm in 2025, marking a 70% expansion in the T&D sector.

Union Minister Manohar Lal has addressed a press conference in New Delhi, where he informed that the transmission network has increased from 2.91 lakh ckm in 2014 to 4.92 lakh ckm in 2025. The Union Minister said that fossil-based power capacity has increased from 168 GW in 2014 to 246 GW in January 2025, an increase of around 46 percent. The non-fossil capacity has increased from around 80 GW in 2014 to around 220 GW in 2025, as of 31 January 2025, which is around a 180 percent increase.

With this development, the average electricity supply in rural areas has increased from 12.5 hours in 2014 to 22.6 hours and to 23.4 hours in urban areas in 2025. The energy shortage has reduced from 4.2% in 2014 to 0.1% in 2025.

Talking about the goals undertaken by the government, Minister Manohar Lal said, “It is our goal to make power accessible to everyone and at all times, and the government is aiming for 100% electrification of households across the country.”
