Ooredoo Group, ASN to Build Submarine Cables Connecting 7 Countries

Ooredoo Group has signed an agreement with Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) to build a new submarine cable connecting Qatar, Oman, the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq.

Ooredoo Group, a multinational telecommunications company in Qatar, has signed an agreement with Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), a French company in the manufacture and installation of submarine cables, to build a new submarine cable connecting seven countries in the region—Qatar, Oman, the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq.

The project will provide all GCC low latency and a shorter and more secure route to a new corridor, connecting Europe with up to 24 fibre pairs and a capacity of up to 720 Tbps.

This subsea cable will deliver connectivity benefits to business customers, governments, artificial intelligence (AI) providers, data centres and telecom operators, enhancing network reliability and security, as well as connection speeds.

Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo, the Group CEO of Ooredoo, said that this historic project aligns with Ooredoo’s ambitious strategy to lead in digital infrastructure by expanding network capacity and interconnectivity across the GCC and beyond. Alain Biston, the CEO of ASN, emphasised that the Fibre in Gulf (FIG) submarine cable project will transform regional connectivity throughout the GCC.
