India Plans to Supply LNG to Sri Lanka, Connecting Power Grids 

India will supply LNG to Sri Lanka’s power plants, strengthening cooperation in the energy sector and facilitating the ongoing energy cooperation projects between India and Sri Lanka.

India plans to supply liquefied natural gas to Sri Lanka’s power plants and will work on connecting the power grids of the two countries, as well as lay a petroleum pipeline with the neighbouring country.

PM Modi and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake have also announced a series of collaborative initiatives to boost ties of the two countries during the Sri Lankan leader’s three-day visit to India from Dec 15-17, 2024.

Indian’s Petronet LNG has signed a deal with Colombo-based LTL Holdings to supply LNG for five years via the Kochi terminal. Both nations have agreed to connect their power grids and construct a multi-product petroleum pipeline to enhance energy security.

Additionally, the countries will also develop offshore wind power in the Palk Straits, complementing ongoing investments by Adani Green Energy of USD 442 million for two wind power stations in the region.

Emphasising the need for reliable, affordable and timely energy resources for ensuring energy security, both leaders have come together for strengthening cooperation in the energy sector and facilitating the energy cooperation projects between India and Sri Lanka.
