History & Journey
Borouge is a leading global petrochemical company that provides innovative and differentiated solutions to a wide range of industries, including energy and infrastructure. Established in 1998, the company is a strategic partnership between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Borealis.

Borouge works closely with Borealis on the wire and cable portfolio, leveraging Borealis’ longstanding history of 60 years in the energy business and its outstanding technology. Borouge has been manufacturing cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) material, based on Borealis’ proprietary Borlink™ technology at its production facilities in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi since 2016.

USPs
Together with Borealis, Borouge has been introducing proprietary technological advances to provide a wide range of energy solutions including XLPE for high productivity and HVDC XLPE cable applications. There are several aspects that differentiate our products from the rest in the market:

Innovation: Our commitment to product innovation and close collaboration with our value chain partners and customers keep us ahead of the competition. Innovation is embedded in Borouge’s DNA and allows the company to offer creative and differentiated solutions for the wire and cable industry.

Highest Quality Standards: The full polymerization process from feedstock to end-product is fully controlled by Borouge and Borealis, ensuring the highest quality and stability of the products. The company has a unique technology platform that allows it to tailor the molecular structure and the cross-linking degree of its XLPE products to meet the specific requirements of different cable applications.

Product Portfolio And Technical Expertise: Borouge offers a full product portfolio to support cable manufacturers with their specific requirements, covering low to high-voltage XLPE solutions, and jacketing solutions for power and fibre optic cables. The product portfolio is complemented by Borouge’s team’s expertise, providing technical services and industry know-how for a well-rounded customer experience.

Quality Control & Assurance
Aside from having full control over the entire polymerization process to ensure the high quality and stability of our products, Borouge and Borealis also have a closed-loop system to maintain the cleanliness of its products. This ensures the avoidance of any exposure to the atmosphere from the reactor to the final packaging and the products are free from any contamination that may affect the cable performance.

Borouge also has constant checks to maintain product consistency and continuous quality during the production process as well as post-manufacturing. Advanced analytical techniques and testing methods are also employed to verify the properties and performance of its products. We also have a dedicated technical service team that supports its customers with product selection, processing optimization and troubleshooting to ensure the desired solution is developed successfully.

Global Presence
Borouge and Borealis have been providing high quality polyolefin compounds to the wire and cable industry across the world. Given the crucial function of cabling and the challenge of installation, safety, reliability and longevity are extremely important to wire and cable manufacturers.

Boosted by customers confidence in the cutting-edge innovations such as Borealis’ Borlink™ technology employed in our solutions, Borouge and Borealis have a global presence, serving customers across the world including Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa.

Sustainability
Borouge is looking at ways to contribute even more towards renewable energy generation via high-voltage power cables in the wire and cable industry. To this end, we are focusing on:

  1. Reducing the emission intensity of Borouge’s polymers during manufacturing
  2. Produce durable, long-lasting materials that fully support the transition of renewable energy against low electrical losses.

Borouge is committed towards operating a sustainable business with solutions that make a positive impact today and tomorrow. Our Al Ruwais Environmental Sustainability Programme (RESP) supports our commitment to mitigating our environmental impact and yielding positive results. The implementation of RESP has enabled us to accomplish this. Compared to the 2018 baseline we managed to:

Borouge remains committed to advancing our sustainability efforts, and as part of this commitment, we recognize the importance of addressing and accurately accounting for Scope 3 emissions – the indirect emissions associated with our value chain. In 2023, we have initiated comprehensive measures to enhance our carbon accounting practices and provide a more thorough assessment of our Scope 3 emissions. Moving forward, we will continue to strengthen these initiatives with a focus on transparency, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Borouge’s GHG Emission Intensity (Tonnes of C02 Equivalent/Tonne) has reduced by almost 45 percent over the last 7 years. Moreover, almost all the sustainability targets that have been set for 2025 have been achieved by 2023.
On the product side, the proprietary Borlink™ technology allows power utilities to operate the power cables for more than 30 years against minimum electrical losses. For example, the proprietary Borlink™ HVDC technology has enabled the use of extruded cable technology to reach higher voltage and transmission levels than ever before.

Borlink™ provides more reliable and sustainable power grids, helping eliminate wastage, and allowing a more efficient transportation of renewable energy over longer distances. Its cross-linked polyethylene material offers the additional sustainability benefit of being recyclable too. This is why our certified Borlink™ solutions are used in the development of several offshore wind projects. This is also how Borouge can help our partners make their transition to clean energy sources, and meet their net-zero objectives.

Future Growth Aspects
Our goal is to continuously grow as a company, with a focus on sustainable and durable products. The manufacturing of durable product parts for Energy and Infrastructure will be a key part of Borouge’s future growth.
Asia continues to be one of our priority markets, with huge potential for growth as the countries experience rapid urbanization with increasing demand for infrastructure upgrades. To meet this demand, Borouge looks to enhance its production capacity to increase its global sales of polyolefin solutions including for the wire and cable sector.
Borouge 4, our fourth expansion of our production facilities, will boost our annual polyolefin production capacity when it is completed by the end of 2025, making it the world’s largest single-site polyolefin complex.

We will be investing in 100,000 tonnes per year of incremental XLPE production capacity from our plant in Abu Dhabi. Borouge is committed to the wire & cable industry for the long term. This investment in a second XLPE production plant will strengthen Borouge’s position in specialized materials for the wire & cable. This further enhances our product portfolio as we collaborate with customers and value chain partners to create more solutions that help drive the global transition to cleaner energy sources and drive development in renewables, energy storage, and electric vehicle demand.

Asia remains a key driver to Borouge’s growth, and we remain committed in our efforts to provide differentiated and sustainable solutions for customers in this region.
