LS Cable & System have recently completed construction of Submarine Building 4, Asia’s largest high-voltage direct current (HVDC) underwater cable plant, in Donghae, Gangwon Province. LS is also participating in the growing demand for offshore wind power generation and recently signed Korea’s largest cable deal in Europe, to supply HVDC cables to the Vanguard Wind Power Complex in the UK.

Leading wire and cable maker LS Cable & System announced completion of Asia’s largest high-voltage direct current (HVDC) underwater cable plant, Submarine Building 4, in Donghae, Gangwon Province. The plant is a 172-meter-tall vertical continuous vulcanization (VCV) tower with a total floor area spanning 34,816 square meters. The construction amount for the project, which started in July 2021, is nearly USD 141 million (KRW 190 billion).

According to LS, the new facility focuses on producing advanced HVDC submarine cables reducing energy losses over long distances, allowing the company to capitalize on the growing renewable energy market and cater to the rising demand for submarine cables driven by offshore wind farm companies. LS Cable’s CEO, Mr. Koo Bon-gyu, commented, “The completion of this HVDC plant will serve as an accelerator for growth in the era of energy transition and the rise of the power industry.”

LS is also participating in the growing demand for offshore wind power generation and high-quality subsea cables for transmitting electricity from turbines to mainland grids. The company signed a USD 302.8 million (KRW 400 billion) deal in December 2022, to supply HVDC cables to the Vanguard Wind Power Complex in the UK, Korea’s largest cable deal signed to date in Europe.
