Bharti Airtel now a part of SEA-ME-WE-6 Undersea Cable consortium

The optical fibre cable system or the SEA-ME-WE-6 will provide one of the lowest latencies at a transfer rate of 100 TB – or 40,000 high-def videos – per second. Within the cable system, Airtel will add a considerable amount of 100 TBPS capacity.

Bharti Airtel Limited has become a part of the SEA-ME-WE-6 undersea cable consortium with the aim to enhance its high-speed global network capacity. Airtel has informed that it is participating as a “major investor” in the cable consortium and is anchoring 20 percent of the investment. The planned cable system is projected to be operational in 2025.

The upcoming optical fibre cable system called the South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6, i.e. SEA-ME-WE-6 will provide one of the lowest latencies between these regions at a transfer rate of 100 TB – or 40,000 high-def videos – per second. The consortium of SEA-ME-WE-6 consists of members like – Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company, Dhiraagu, Djibouti Telecom, Mobily, Orange, Singtel, Sri Lanka Telecom, Telecom Egypt, Telekom Malaysia, and Telin.

The proposed undersea cable system spanning a length of 19,200 route km is going to link Singapore and France. It will be one of the largest undersea cable systems across the world.

Airtel informed in a statement that with the SEA-ME-WE-6 consortium, it will add a sizeable amount of 100 TBPS capacity to the network.

The telecom service company has acquired one Fiber Pair on the main SEA-ME-WE-6 system and will be involved in co-building four Fiber Pairs between Singapore – Chennai – Mumbai. Within the cable consortium, Airtel will land the SEA-ME-WE-6 cable system in India at new landing stations in Mumbai and Chennai.

The SEA-ME-WE-6 system will be integrated with Nxtra, which is the data centre unit of Airtel, through the data centres based in Mumbai and Chennai which will boost India’s position as an emerging data centre hub.
