LEONI is a global supplier of wires, cables, and wiring systems for the automotive sector and other industries. The wiring systems division of LEONI develops, manufactures, and supplies innovative wiring solutions, and associated components, for passenger cars, trucks, off-highway vehicles, power sports applications as well as for system and component suppliers. In a conversation with Wire & Cable India magazine, Mr. Ravi Baraskar, Managing Director, LEONI Wiring Systems (Pune) Pvt. Ltd., sheds light on the company, its specialised range of products, and presents an outlook on the key long-term and short-term goals for this segment.

Wire & Cable India: Could you present a brief overview and significant milestones of your company?

Ravi Baraskar: LEONI Wiring Systems (Pune) Pvt. Ltd. was incorporated in 2008 as a private limited company under its present name and started engineering office in 2010 parallel with manufacturing facility supply started in 2012. The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of LEONI Bordnetz Systeme GmbH, Germany (the holding company). LEONI Group is a global provider of products and solutions for energy and data management in the automotive sector and other industries. LEONI Group’s largest customer group comprises the global car, commercial vehicle, and component supply industry, for which the company makes both standard and special cables as well as custom-developed wiring systems and related components.

LEONI Wiring Systems (Pune) is currently focusing on expanding its position in the Indian market – both with Indian domestic OEMs and global customers’ facilities located in the country. The company is engaged in the manufacturing and sales of wiring harness and provides engineering services mainly to group companies. It has a registered office at Pirangut in Pune, Maharashtra which is also its manufacturing facility. Further, it has an engineering service hub located at Baner, Pune.

Our global technology area has an integrative development approach with OEM. We aim to generate higher value from automotive trends and become a sustainable full-solution provider.

WCI: Tell us about the infrastructure, product portfolio, manufacturing capabilities, and types of machinery installed at your facility.

RB: We, at LEONI Wiring Systems (Pune), fully focus as a commercial vehicle and OEM supplier and manufacture various wiring harness range – from small to big – containing 10 lead to 300 lead for various functional requirements like engine, generator, emission system, battery, construction equipment, frame, HVAC, headlamp, and infotainment. We have a well-established engineering service centre for development activities, world-class machinery, and automatic equipment like automatic cutting, crimping, and sealing with CFM facility, ultrasonic welding, braiding, and state-of-the-art test facility.

WCI: What is the market footprint of your company? Do you have any plans to expand your reach?

RB: LEONI has its presence in 30 countries along with 72 subsidiaries and 101,000 employees. Currently, LEONI Wiring System (Pune) focuses on all commercial vehicle and OEM supplies; hence, there is no immediate plan to expand the footprint. There is an expansion plan within the current facility with extra investment for new machines and equipment for new projects in 2022 and 2023.

WCI: What are the key trends in wire harnessing and how do you envisage the segment in the coming years?

RB: Trends have changed majorly due to change in emission norms. New trends can be seen in many electronic devices, communication devices, sensors, ABS and added safety features. The amount of wiring systems in automotive has increased due to overall changes, customer aspiration and connectivity application. The introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles provokes additional high voltage harnesses. As a general trend, we see a change in the wiring systems set-up towards a more zonal and modular architecture, which is favourable for more automated production.

WCI: What are the company’s key long-term and short-term goals for this segment?

RB: The Company is well-aligned with new market trends. LEONI is a supplier of choice for our strategic customers developing from a build-to-print and co-design to a full-design-supplier. Besides its focus on European passenger car manufacturers, LEONI focuses on top market players worldwide in its trucks and off-road business.
