The European Union has imposed anti-dumping duties on Chinese makers of single-mode fibre optic hybrid cables for telecoms networks. The European optical fibre cable industry has a vital role in the EU’s digital agenda, as optical fibre cables are a strategic component in the transition to advanced broadband telecommunication networks in homes and for business in the EU.

The tariff has been imposed in the range of 19.7 percent to 44 percent on single-mode, hybrid cables that combine fibre optic and copper cables.
However, the duties do not cover multimode optical fibre cables or cables for submarine use.
On the basis of an investigation initiated by the Commission in September 2020 following a complaint lodged by Europacable, who represents more than 25 percent of the total EU production of optical fibre cables, there are pieces of evidence that come to light of dumping affecting their businesses from Chinese companies selling at over half the cost of producing the cables, or an average 123 percent dumping margin.
