Global Wires India–Tata Steel: Steel Industry is Bouncing Back

A division of Tata Steel Ltd., Global Wires India (GWI) is one of the largest steel wire manufacturers in the world with a combined annual manufacturing capacity of 0.42 million tonnes per annum. Consistent with the vision and values of Tata Steel, Global Wires India strives to strengthen its industrial base. In an interview with Wire & Cable India magazine, Mr. Anurag Pandey, Executive-in-charge, Global Wires India-Tata Steel, talks about the business journey, specialised products, prestigious projects, and technological advancements of the company.

Wire & Cable India: Could you please take us through the business journey of your company?

Anurag Pandey: Global Wires India’s strong presence for 7 decades has helped grow and achieve many milestones. Incorporated in 1958 as Special Steels Pvt. Ltd., GWI started its operations with galvanized wires. From Gogte Steel Amalgamation in 1979 to a subsidiary of Tata Steel and subsequently, to become a division of Tata Steel in 2002, GWI has come a long way. Growth was the key focus in the last two decades. GWI has expanded its capacities while also ensuring that changing expectations and requirements of customers are also met.

Induction Hardened and Tempered (IHT) wire is the new addition to our product basket which finds its application in the auto segment as mono-shock absorbers.

WCI: Tell us about some of your specialised products along with their USPs.

AP: Induction Hardened and Tempered (IHT) wire is the new addition to our product basket which finds its application in the auto segment as mono-shock absorbers. We take pride in saying that GWI is the first to manufacture them in India. This is an initiative taken up in line with Atmanirbhar Bharat. The trials are in progress and customer feedback is very encouraging.

Aayush wire is another trademark product of our basket. The special coating is developed indigenously by our R&D and technology team which increases the life of the product and enhances durability.

WCI: What are the top prestigious projects for which your company has supplied products?

AP: Our LRPC strands are used in many prestigious projects. To name a few, we supplied 4000 MT to Bangalore Metro project with SOB ~ 75 percent, supplied ~ 2250 MT to Narmada River extra dosed bridge with SOB ~ 80 percent,~ 1100 MT supplied to Delhi Metro Phase IV Expansion in the past one year holding SOB of ~ 60-70 percent. Other projects include animal overpasses on Mumbai-Delhi expressway, Delhi-Meerut RRTS project, LNG Tank – GUJARAT, RAPP (Rajasthan Atomic Power project). Ahmedabad-Mumbai high-speed bullet train, Samruddhi Mahamarg Project, etc.

WCI: What is your target for the next two years in regard to market reach, R&D and technological advancements?

AP: GWI’s main focus for the next two years would be growth and focused study on various advanced wire coatings like ZnAl, ZnMgAl, PE, etc. Also, our technology team is working closely with TSL R&D team to stabilise the indigenous coatings. Our growth projects are targeted to aim at ~20 percent of addressable market share by FY 24. We are also working on services & solutions and target 20 percent of overall revenue generation from S&S.

WCI: Share your outlook on the Indian steel sector.

AP: Indian steel industry is bouncing back. With the government’s focus on infrastructure development to boost up the economy and support to steel & automotive sectors through different PLI schemes, the demand looks positive.
