Supermac Industries (India) Ltd.: Indian Extrusion Lines at Par With International Standards

“The technology in the Indian cable industry essentially gives lower output and slow speed of extrusion lines, whereas the international standards are much higher. Wire & Cable India recently interviewed Mr. Jasvinder Singh, Supermac. Excerpts:

Wire and Cable India: Tell us briefly about Supermac’s beginning and journey so far including the major milestones achieved.

Jasvinder Singh: Wire and cable industry was comparatively at a primitive stage when we entered machinery making back in 1970s. We started with maintenance of imported machinery which was used by the cable industry in India and ventured into making the machines ourselves. Being technocrats, our focus was more on technological improvements rather business profitability. Most of our efforts were put in for development of better and better machines.

Started with manufacturing of machines for house wire cables, we now manufacture CCV extrusion lines up to 132 KVA and high output machines which can manufacture wires and cables up to 1 km/min. We are also producing automatic machines with ‘Automatic Dual Control’ take-up where changeover of the cable, produced from one spool to the other, is electronically controlled so that there is no loss of production. The technological development is a regular process in Supermac due to our focus on technology. We shall endeavor to match the latest technology available in the world.

WCI: As a provider of process technologies and manufacturing systems for cable industries worldwide, what are your major observations regarding the state of technology in the Indian cable industry and how do your solutions address the most persistent bottlenecks faced? (If possible cite examples and solutions proposed by you)

JS: The technology in the Indian cable industry essentially gives lower output and slow speed of extrusion lines, whereas the international standards are much higher. We are offering extrusion lines that are almost at par if compared with the output/line speed offered by the international machinery manufacturers and our prices are about half of the prices quoted by the international machine suppliers. For this, we are using some imported measuring and control instruments. We have adopted the new technology and offer the latest control systems.

WCI: Elaborate us on the areas wherein your machinery solutions are used extensively by the cable industry.

JS: Our machinery solutions are used in the house wiring, building wire, energy cables and automotive wires; power cables with medium voltage dry cure CCV line; control cables, telephone cables, data cables, solar cables and optical fiber cables.

WCI: Tell us briefly about your manufacturing facilities and R&D activities.

Supermac 1JS: We started making machines as technocrats. Through free hand sketches for the various machine components and personal supervision, we were able to guide the skilled workers. We shifted to drawing boards and blue prints for drawings of various machine parts. Now all the drawings are made on computers with Solidworks software. This has improved the speed of designing and visualizing the machinery parts for successful machine design has become easier. The skilled manpower, fully equipped with latest computer software, helps in designing machines with better technology.

Initially, we were working on conventional machines – mother machinery made in India. Gradually, we shifted to imported machinery and special purpose machines. For the last ten years, we have switched to Computerized Numerically Controlled (CNC) machines. The accuracy and precision of machining has improved by leaps and bounds.

WCI: Cables are critical to today’s power and data communication where quality precedes everything else. Your quality commitments will surely result into a greater quality of cables. As a manufacturer of machinery, what are your quality commitments?

JS: Starting with the raw material used in manufacturing various components of the machines offered by us, we utilize the best of bought out components like electric motors, drives, gear box, diameter control gauge, etc. Moreover, the mother machinery used by us is of the highest quality. We got ISO Certification and CE Certification for the quality maintenance processes used by us.
