WCI recently interacted with Mr. B Kamal Babu, MD, Mikrotek Machines Ltd. to know the basics on which the company works to stay amongst the top diamond die makers of the world. Excerpts:
Wire and Cable India: To start with, tell us something about Mikrotek, its inception, and journey till now.
B. Kamal Babu: Mikrotek was started by me in 1993 to manufacture an entire range of precision diamond dies and die polishing equipment, used in wire and cable production. I am a mechanical engineer from Bangalore University and have done post-graduate diplomas in Applied Statistics and Industrial Management from IISC, Bangalore. Having manufacturing experience in high precision watch jewel industry, I had keen interest and ambition to start my own industry to manufacture high quality, import substitute engineering products. After the global search, I identified diamond wire drawing dies. Thus Mikrotek started.
Since then, Mikrotek has been catering to Indian and overseas cable and wire companies. Our products have been well accepted by the customers for its quality; that is why the product demand has grown tremendously. With constantly expanding our product portfolio and enhancing our infrastructure, we have been entering into newer markets side by side. WCI: What products are there in your portfolio? Tell us about your services.
BKB: We have diamond dies which includes natural diamond dies, polycrystalline diamond dies, and mono diamond dies. Then there are tungsten carbide dies, die-shop equipment like ultrasonic machines, wire polishing machines, tungsten carbide die working equipment, die inspection equipment including training and entire range of consumables for drawing die shops such as diamond powder, diamond liquid, diamond paste, diamond needles, grinding pins etc. We also offer re-polishing and reconditioning services at customers’ sites on contract.
WCI: As a manufacturer of wire dies, do tell us about the significance of a good die for manufacturing quality dies
BKB: Our products offer more value and better performance mainly because we ensure good wire quality in terms of wire surface finish and roundness. Our products yield more tonnage of wire per die (Draw More). The customers get precision technology at affordable cost, higher die life in every size till the end and optimum number of recuts. The diamond dies can be customized as well according to customer’s required specifications.
WCI: Brief us about the infrastructure and manufacturing facilities you have for manufacturing such a range of wire dies.
BKB: We have a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility of 60000 sqft fully equipped with latest machines and equipment. Our plant is located near Bangalore and is ISO 9001-2015 certified. We have professionally trained skilled workforce. Further, we are thinking to expand our manufacturing facility to gear up with the market demand. We provide accommodation and all necessary amenities to our employees.
WCI: Having been associated with the wire and cable industry as a key supplier, it is important for us to know your views on the state of the Indian wire and cable industry.
BKB: Over the decades, Indian wire and cable industry has been growing rapidly. Over the past few years, most of the cable companies have bought in latest high speed multi wire drawing machines. The customers are demanding international quality at economical price. This has brought a new challenge to us to supply diamond dies in terms of wire quality, speed of drawing and ensuring less number of wire breaks. We are in the forefront and associated with almost all major wire and cable industries.
