9000 Mile Long Undersea Cable Project Worth USD 250 Begins

The South East Asia-U.S. system, the undersea cable, will link five areas and territories

April 14, 2015

The USD 250 million undersea fiber-optic cable project that will add capacity to the growing Internet traffic between Asia and the U.S. mainland — via Guam and Honolulu — has started, GTA Teleguam and its partners announced last week.

Guam’s GTA is a partner in the consortium of international companies that is investing in the project. “GTA is excited about this consortium,” stated Robert Haulbrook, GTA president and chief executive officer, in a press release.

“With this system, collectively, we are well positioned to meet the growing demand for increased bandwidth and strengthening our position to enhance overall network redundancy,” he added.

Known as the South East Asia-U.S. system, the undersea cable will link five areas and territories: Manado in Indonesia, Davao in southern Philippines, Guam, Honolulu, Hawaii and Los Angeles, California.

The project involves laying more than 9,000 miles of cable. Its path was engineered to bypass earthquake-prone areas in East Asia, the consortium announced. The cable system will provide an initial 20 terabit per second capacity, with state-of-the-art 100 gigabit per second technology, the consortium announced.
