Bayobab, a wholesale fibre optic subsidiary of pan-African communications giant MTN Group, is planning to build a fibre optic cable network across South Sudan.
This information was shared by the National Communications Authority (NCA), the official communication regulatory body of the Republic of South Sudan, on X (formerly Twitter).
As per the post, “The NCA hosted a meeting with a team from Bayobab. The team presented their plans for the construction of a fibre optic cable network across South Sudan. Bayobab (formerly MTN GlobalConnect) is a leading provider of next-generation digital solutions across Africa.”

Local media reports said the meeting focused on Bayobab’s plans to enhance South Sudan’s digital infrastructure by providing an affordable and reliable internet access for those living in this East African country.
The project, if implemented, would enhance the company’s ambitions to become a world-class open access digital infrastructure platform focused on Africa.

As per Bayobab, it has so far laid a proprietary terrestrial fibre network of 114,000 km and plans to roll out another 135,000 km by 2025, to realise its business strategy. The company has 47 multinational points of presence across Africa with in-country presence in its strategic subsidiaries, which enables it to remain closer with its 290 million local subscribers.
