The KFON project aims at providing internet connectivity to 20 lakh households in Kerala. Out of 34,961 km of ADS fiber optic cable, 11,906 km have been completed across the 14 districts across the state.

Below poverty line (BPL) families in Kerala will be provided with free Internet connections under the state government’s KFON project in May. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has informed that 100 BPL families in each of the 140 Assembly constituencies will get a free Internet connection in the initial stage.
Chief Minister Vijayan said in a tweet, “The KFON project, which aims at providing internet connectivity for free to around 20 lakh BPL families & at subsidised rates for the rest is progressing quickly. Of the current 2600 km of optical ground wire installation, 2045 km has been completed.”
The KFON project aims at providing internet connectivity to 20 lakh households in Kerala. The previous Left Democratic Front Government had announced the availability of internet connection as a basic right when the INR 1,548-crore KFON project was launched in 2019.

In addition to providing connectivity to all homes, the project also aims at linking all government offices. Chief Minister said in another tweet “Of the 30,000 government offices, 3019 have been given connectivity. Now, 3000-5000 offices are added to the network every month & will be completed by June 2022. By May 2022, a free internet connection will be provided to 100 BPL families in every assembly constituency.”
Out of 34,961 km of All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADS) fiber optic cable, 11,906 km have been completed across the 14 districts. Of 2,600 km of optical ground wire for the project, 2,045 km have been completed.

The work on 114 Points of Presence (POP) has been completed, while work on 216 more is progressing. These are being established in the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) substations. The KSEB and the Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited are implementing the project.
